Faith!
Do I believe the right thing? Do I not?
I grew up in the First Christian Church,(Disciples of Christ) church.
By the age of 12, for us kids…it was just expected that we would go forward to profess Christ. We would then have a class on beliefs. Upon completion of the class, we would reiterate that we believed Jesus was the son of God and took him as our savior. Then we would be baptized.
QUESTION (and not to be ugly)
But what do you expect of a CHILD … who has never heard any other religion or philosophy …to do?
It is all we know.
We are not given choices or other understandings.
For the most part, we don’t even know they exist.
C’mon think about it…when we, in the west, think about the last 2,000 years of history…we disclude Asia and Russia. We, as Christians, act like Israel, Turkey, Greece, and Italy were the only entities on Earth.
When you spoon-feed someone only one ideology…
And PROTECT them from all others…
Is it faith? OR is it just “Okay, this is what everyone I know believes so it must be true?”
Is a child’s confession of faith still legit if they are comparing it to nothing?
Can they possibly be saying “yes, above all these other thoughts around… I believe in Jesus. He is THE truth compared to what is out there. I know for certain His reign is supreme over other ideologies.
We need to be raising kids and adults who can stand on their faith not from hearsay but from truth and conviction.
Until Next Time~
Blessings, Kate
