Our Life Circumstances Are Not Unique– Others Go Through This Too

The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss and have found their way out of the depths.  These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and deep loving concern.  Beautiful people don’t just happen. 

When I was going through some ugly times I remember being told more than once “someday God will use this to help other people.”  I don’t remember if that made me feel any better. 

But what I do remember is the first time it came true.  I was in a group and a lady got an awful call about her child.  Immediately it took me back to my same experience 6 years prior.  All the pain I had gone through was replaced by sincere compassion for a lady I had just met.  She tried to play the details off like it wasn’t that bad.  But I was able to stand by her and admit it was bad and I had been through it too.  I shared my experience, the strength that I now had, and hope for the future for her and her child. 

That moment of connection does not come from a graduate who read a book on parenting issues.  There are some things professionals will never quite understand because they haven’t lived it themselves.  So I say to you… If you have gone through something difficult, even ugly, God can and will use it to help someone else if you remain open to being used by God in order to help someone through the same pain you have had or are having today.
