How many years do you want to live before you die? As I write this my goal is 93. Now, I do have health issues. So, as my son reminds me, my life may be shorter than 93 years. But then, I hope he is wrong because he is giving me only 19 more years (til I am 70). That is his HOPE.
YIKES! That is such a short time! How did time get away from me so fast?
This week I came across a verse that also reminds me to be mindful of what time I have left:
Psalm 90:12 ICB: Teach us how short our lives really are so that we may be wise.
How short our lives are! Elsewhere in scripture we find comparisons for our lives.
James 4:14 TPT But you don’t have a clue what tomorrow may bring. For your fleeting life is but a warm breath of air that is visible in the cold only for a moment and then vanishes!
Psalm 39:5 ICB You have given me only a short life. My lifetime is like nothing to you. Everyone’s life is only a breath.
I have friends that are in their 80’s and 90’s. They are truly grateful for the time they have had. But at times they do wonder how much more time they have. They plan for the future but live for today.
In Psalm 90:10, the purpose of knowing how short our lives are – is so that we will be wise. It is not good to live according to the flesh for our whole lives… hoping to put off our proper decisions and actions for later in life. We are warned often to avoid folly.
Proverbs 5:23 (NLT) He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness.
Psalm 15:21 (ICB) A man without wisdom enjoys being foolish. But a man with understanding does what is right.
Proverbs 14:16 (ICB) A wise person is careful and stays out of trouble. But a foolish person is quick to act and careless.
As you can see it is better for us to act in wisdom. If we think we have “forever” (a LONG time still) to live, we may live foolishly. We may waste our time and our lives. We may not take serious the tasks before us- in preparation for what is to come.
As Christians that means we need to take care to live a godly life and be ready for Christ’s return at any moment.
The parable of the 10 virgins/ 10 girls:
Mathew 25 1-13 (ICB) A Story About Ten Girls
25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten girls who went to wait for the bridegroom. They took their lamps with them. 2 Five of the girls were foolish and five were wise. 3 The five foolish girls took their lamps, but they did not take more oil for the lamps to burn. 4 The wise girls took their lamps and more oil in jars. 5 The bridegroom was very late. All the girls became sleepy and went to sleep.
6 “At midnight someone cried out, ‘The bridegroom is coming! Come and meet him!’ 7 Then all the girls woke up and got their lamps ready. 8 But the foolish girls said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil. Our lamps are going out.’ 9 The wise girls answered, ‘No! The oil we have might not be enough for all of us. Go to the people who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
10 “So the five foolish girls went to buy oil. While they were gone, the bridegroom came. The girls who were ready went in with the bridegroom to the wedding feast. Then the door was closed and locked.
11 “Later the others came back. They called, ‘Sir, sir, open the door to let us in.’ 12 But the bridegroom answered, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’
13 “So always be ready. You don’t know the day or the time the Son of Man will come.
We do not know when Christ will return. We are not promised any tomorrows to get our stuff/act together. We need to live wisely everyday.
Proverbs 3:13-18 ICB
13 Happy is the person who finds wisdom. And happy is the person who gets understanding.
14 Wisdom is worth more than silver. It brings more profit than gold.
15 Wisdom is more precious than rubies. Nothing you want is equal to it.
16 With her right hand wisdom offers you a long life. With her left hand she gives you riches and honor.
17 Wisdom will make your life pleasant. It will bring you peace.
18 As a tree makes fruit, wisdom gives life to those who use it. Everyone who uses wisdom will be happy.
How to get wisdom
James1:5-6 ICB 5 But if any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. God is generous. He enjoys giving to all people, so God will give you wisdom. 6 But when you ask God, you must believe. Do not doubt God. Anyone who doubts is like a wave in the sea. The wind blows the wave up and down.
We ask God to give us wisdom, then we keep our eyes, ears, minds open for how he speaks to us and accomplishes this desire.
Just because someone of the world is successful does not mean what they consider smart actions is what God considers wise. But it may be. Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
We are to test the messages we receive. Not all things that sound good are actually wise.
In order to know wisdom- immerse yourself in the Word of God. Everything God guides us to is in line with His Word. Colossians 3:16 says ”Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
We also seek out insight from other Christians who are mature in their faith: Psalm 19:20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.
Psalm 145:4 NLT Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.
We do not have to recreate the wheel. We can learn much from those who have longer time in the faith. They have much wisdom to share about loving God and living according to His will in all areas of our lives.
Our lives are but a vapor. We are here one minute and not the next. How we live matters- not only to those around us now, but eventually for our eternal resting place. While it is important to have goals and to stay on track with future endeavors, we keep in mind that all this will be gone one day, perhaps sooner than it seems. It doesn’t mean we have to hurry up and have it all done right away. It means we make the most of our time. We understand that today is a gift. We do not spend it chasing the wind and the things which will be burned up on the day of judgement. We have a higher calling. We have a way of life laid out for us.
Psalm 90:12 ICB: Teach us how short our lives really are so that we may be wise. Until Next Time~ Blessings, Kate
