Are you listening for God’s requests?

Do you remember the last time God made a request of you? Maybe it was big like “make up with someone who really hurt you.” Maybe it was small like “say hello and compliment this stranger. ”

How did you respond? Did you question God? Did you ask if he was sure this is what he wanted from you right now?

When I was pregnant, I stored my money, at my apartment, in envelopes. Each one had a random amount. I just would put in what I had after paying bills. I was saving for maternity leave which would be unpaid.

One Sunday morning during first service at church, I felt the Holy Spirit impress upon me to go back home and get a specific amount of money to bring back for offering in second service.

For a minute I thought I was crazy. This had never happened to me before. (although this type of thing has happened more since this episode).

I was frustrated. Why would Good ask this of me: a single woman, on minimum wage, needing money to live on once the baby came. And this weird number was quite large for me (and still would be).

I argued all the way home with myself and God. But when  I opened the first envelope, there was the exact odd amount I felt I was too give! Now I knew it was God and I wasn’t making it up. But that confirmation wasn’t enough for me to relax. I still argued all the way back to church. I just couldn’t fathom: why me? Why now?

(After I was faithful something amazing happened within a few minutes during greeting time…that’s a story for another post. But other times after being faithful nothing happens).

Ever been there? Wondering why God would ask you to do something?

I believe sometimes we are in the right place at the right time. Sometimes, maybe, it’s because God already knows we will be faithful, and he needs the job done for his reasons. And lastly, I believe it’s a test of our faith (James. 1:3) so that we may be mature and complete.

Part of God’s plans for us in the future depend on our obedience today. If you can be faithful in the little things, he can trust you with bigger things.

God is always looking for willing followers who will carry out his will.

I think it’s ok to question, to be in disbelief, to be confused. God can take it. Yet, while we are questioning, we have to remember he is still looking for our obedience.

Are you listening today?

Are you prepared to hear that still small voice?

Are you ready and willing to surrender to his requests?

There is an old hymn which says, “Trust and obey/ for there’s no other way / to be happy in Jesus/ than to trust and obey.”

Until Next Time
Blessings, Kate

  1. I love this. It is so true that sometimes we just don’t understand the requests God has of us, and he can take our confusion and frustration. Our job is to trust and obey. Someday it will all make sense. Maybe just not this side of heaven. 😊
