The Worth Of Bible Characters…Were They/ Did They Feel Worthy?

Bible Heroes and their perceived / felt worth…CLUE it is not the same thing.

People look at beauty and achievements to discern someone’s worth.

But God looks at the heart:
1Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel “ Do not look at his appearance or height for I have rejected him, the Lord does not see as man does For man sees the outward appearance (beauty/ works) But the Lord sees the heart.”
John 7:24 Jesus said “ Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.

We think the Bible heroes were special because they were 1) chosen by God & 2) did great big things. But who is to say a whole bunch of others weren’t used by God just because they didn’t make it into the book of limited pages. And maybe they did smaller things…things like you and me do daily.

Yet dealing with the ones we know of let us have a look at a few.
Moses had many excuses to not serve God when called. First, he killed a man in rage = on the surface a sinner of a BIG sin. Blew it blew his chances! ?
On the other had he was passionate for the Hebrew people which would lend to determination and follow through. And he hated the mistreatment of his people who he would want them saved and released. Moses felt inadequate too: Exodus 3:11 “ But Moses protested to Go” WHO AM I to appear before Pharaoh? WHO AM I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?

Jacob the father of the 12 tribes of Israel…Genesis 32:10 “ I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to my, your servant. “

Isaiah declared “ I am a man of unclean  lips” when called to prophecy.

Abraham fell to the ground when God told him about the covenant and countless descendants he would have (Genesis 17:3).

David- runt of his brothers
Many wives and concubines
Murdered Uriah (an innocent man)
After having a adulteress affair and impregnating Bathsheba…Unlikely and UNWORTHY  but also declared a man after God’s own heart.

Job- all those trials. His wife called him a loser and told him to go ahead and curse God then die. He wished the day of his birth would perish and turn dark and that the Lord would acknowledge it no more.

Gideon—Judges 6:14-15 “ the Lord turned to Gideon and said “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand/ AM I not sending you?…”Pardon me my Lord” Gideon replied” but HOW CAN I save Israel? My clan is the weakest of Manasseh and I AM THE LEAST in my family.

Jeremiah was called to remain single and childless while being a prophet for God. He was extremely lonely. And the people constantly rejected and ridiculed him while he was doing the work of the Lord.

Saul/Paul—Imprisoned and chastised Christians, even had them killed and participated in it. TOTALLY unworthy to spread news about Jesus after all that… But God says in  Acts 9:15…God tell Annanias But the Lord said “Go for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.

John the Baptist , cousin to Jesus, didn’t even feel worthy to untie Jesus’ sandals (Luke 3:16).

Rahab—a practicing harlot is used to hide the spies. She becomes mother to Boaz who protects and married Ruth. She is mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus In Matthew.

Tamar—dressed as a prostitute to trick her father in law into sleeping with her and impregnating her. She is David’s Great Grandmother to the 9th generation and she also is mentioned in the genealogy. (these are 2 of only 3 women who get mentioned)

So if we say : I am not worthy then we are in good company of some of the most famous people of all time

If we say I am not worthy” we are correct, because neither were they.

Heck, Abram wasn’t even a believer when God called him to leave everything and go where God had yet to disclose to him.

God will use whomever HE WANTS regardless of their background.

His ways are NOT our ways.

His thoughts are NOT our thoughts…they are as far (different) as heaven is to earth.

Who are we to tell the potter what to make out of our clay. We are just broken vessels (with holes) that only He can fill …that only He finds worthy.

What makes us worthy of life and love is that God created us.

Its not what we do.
We cannot earn favor… GOD already gives it.
We just have to walk in it and not disrespect and disobey.

But even if we disobey and walk away, He is faithful rather than just. He does not punish those who return and are truly sorry and want another chance. He is the Father of the Prodigal children ready to welcome them home with open arms and celebration that

  • 1)They have come back home,
  • 2) they no longer walk in darkness
  • 3) they are not alone and vulnerable to the miserable life this world will offer and inflict on them.

No one is worthy no not one.

But each person is worthy to live and be loved because of the glory poured out on each of us  during our individual creation.  With loving tenderness, He formed us in our mother’s wombs. He knew who we would be. And despite our bad choices, he always lovingly waits for us to get inline with His will.

He will use and find worth whomever He chooses.

…whether the world finds that person worthy or not has no bearing on how God views that person.

God deems worthy those that love Him and sometimes those who hated Jesus’ in the beginning (Saul/Paul).

No one is beyond redemption.

As it appears God predominantly chooses people who view themselves as unworthy and inadequate so that the glory can be His and His alone and in no way attributed to the person chosen and used.

SO if you feel unworthy– congratulations– you just might have a great future in front of you.

Until Next Time~
Blessings, Kate
